Many used motorcycles are in great condition, with plenty of good rides left in them. Some, however, are barely more than scrap metal. You need to understand as much as you can about a used motorcycle’s overall condition if you want to get a good deal and make an informed purchasing decision. That’s why the experts at Empire Motorsports have created this used motorcycle inspection guide. 

Outer Appearance

Start by taking a look at the motorcycle’s outer appearance. Minor scratches, nicks, and dings aren’t serious in and of themselves and can usually be painted over. However, they can tell you a lot about how well previous owners took care of the used motorcycle. They provide a good indication of how often and how hard the used motorcycle fell. You should also check on the tires to make sure that they are properly aligned. Misaligned tires are often a sign that a motorcycle has been in at least one crash. 

Internal Components

Wheels are far from the only thing that can become misaligned. The inside of a used motorcycle is full of nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies that all need to be inspected. If anything appears out of place or in otherwise poor condition, that’s a good sign of poor maintenance. Be patient and thorough while inspecting a used motorcyle’s interior. 

Basic Systems

You’ll also need to check up on the used motorcycle’s basic systems, including the fuel system, electrical systems, and cooling system. Make sure that the wiring is intact and that the fuel tank is free of discolored fuel and metal flakes. Check that the coolant is in good condition and the coolant can flow as needed. Finally, inspect the air filter and spark plug. These components are easy to replace. If they are in poor condition, that indicates a lack of proper maintenance.
