All About KTM® Motorcycles

The History

KTM began in Austria right before the onset of World War II, during the 1930s. Their full name was originally “Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen,” meaning “motor vehicles by [Hans] Trunkenpolz [made in] Mattighofen.” Mattighofen, Austria, is still the location of the company’s headquarters to this day.

Before World War II, founder Hans Trunkenpolz opened a vehicle repair shop, only to find demand for this service significantly decreased following the war’s terminus. Instead, he decided to focus on building his own motorcycles. Trunkenpolz’s first prototype, the R100, came about in 1951. An investor named Ernst Kronreif became a company shareholder soon after, which meant that his last initial replaced “Kraftfahrzeug” in the company’s name.

Both Trunkenpolz and Kronreif died in the early 1960s, which made Erich Trunkenpolz, Hans’ son, the leader. Erich chose to expand the company heavily over the next several years, finally entering the United States market in 1978. After Erich died in 1989, the company splintered into four entities, three of which were gathered under the moniker KTM Group by 2015. However, this never stopped them from producing top-quality bikes for both the European and American markets.
